Woody brought this black Chevy Silverado in at the start of June, right as summer settled over Panama City for good. Black paint, black wheels, and a truck that lives in a driveway instead of a garage. He was tired of it looking great for a day after a wash and hazy again by the weekend, so he booked a ceramic coating. It came in first thing in the morning and I had the whole day with it.
Why a Black Truck That Sits Outside Needs This More Than Most
Black paint hides nothing. Every swirl from a brush wash, every water spot from an afternoon storm, every layer of dust and pollen shows up like it was drawn on. Add the Florida sun beating on a flat black hood all day, then rain, then sun again, and the water spots start etching into the clear coat instead of rinsing off. A ceramic coating puts a hard, slick layer on top of that clear coat. Water sheets off instead of sitting and drying, dirt has a much harder time grabbing on, and the UV hits the coating before it hits the paint. The truck still needs washing, but washing goes twice as fast and the paint stays looking the way it does in these photos for years instead of weeks.
The Work
It started with a proper wash and a full decontamination, iron remover and clay, so the paint was actually clean and not just shiny. Then the truck went under the hex lights for an inspection, and that is where black paint tells on itself. Most of the panels were in good shape, but a few had swirls and light marring from past washes. Those panels got a one-step polish before anything else happened. You never coat over defects. A coating locks in whatever is underneath it, so if the swirls stay, they stay for the life of the coating.
After the polish, every panel got a wipe down to strip the polishing oils so the coating could bond straight to the clear coat. Then the coating went on one panel at a time, leveled by hand, and the truck sat in the garage to cure before it saw the outside again. Every coating here is applied by me personally, in a climate controlled garage, not a parking lot.
The Result
Under the hex lights the bed side turned into a mirror. You can follow the light grid down the whole length of the truck without a break in it, and the black wheels came out as dark as the paint. Out in the driveway in full sun it looked even better, deep black with the clouds reflected sharp in the doors. That is the part people do not expect from a coating. It is not just protection. Done right, on paint that was corrected first, it makes the truck look better than it did the day it left the lot.
September in Panama City is still summer. We are in the thick of hurricane season, the storms roll in most afternoons, and love bug season is right around the corner, which is brutal on a black front end.
