Ethan brought this 2019 Buick Encore in during the first week of June, right as school let out and the Panama City summer got going for real. Deep red paint, light cloth seats, and a family crossover that had been doing family crossover things. His quote request said it plain: kids, sand, stains. He booked a full detail and dropped it off at the garage for the day.
Why the Family Car Takes the Worst Beating
A car with kids in it lives a different life than any other vehicle in the driveway. Crackers in the seat tracks, juice on the seats, and after every trip to the beach a fresh layer of sand ground into the carpet by little feet. Light cloth seats show every bit of it. Then the outside gets the usual Panama City treatment: pollen in the spring, afternoon storms that leave water spots baked on by morning, and bugs on the front end all summer. A quick vacuum and a drive-through wash at the gas station make it look okay for about a day. The grit in the carpet and the stains in the fabric are still there. A full interior and exterior detail is a reset. It gets the car back to the point where you would hand someone the keys without apologizing first.
The Work
The outside went first. A foam pre-wash to lift the loose dirt, then a two bucket hand wash with the wheels, tires, and wheel wells done separately so the brake dust never touched the paint. After that a decontamination step to pull off the bonded film that a normal wash leaves behind, which is what makes red paint look deep again instead of flat. Hand dried, tires dressed, glass cleaned inside and out.
Then the part Ethan actually booked it for. Everything came out of the cabin, the seats went all the way forward and all the way back, and compressed air blew the sand out of the seat tracks, the vents, and every crevice a vacuum cannot reach. The cloth seats and the carpet got deep cleaned, not just vacuumed, so the stains came out instead of getting covered up. The dash, door panels, and console got wiped down and protected without the greasy shine, and the door jambs and cargo area got the same attention as the front seats. Every job here is done by me personally, start to finish, in a climate controlled garage rather than a parking lot.
The Result
Under the hex lights the red paint went from dusty to glossy, with the light grid running clean across the hood and down the doors. Inside is where it really showed. The cream seats came back cream instead of grey, the carpet was carpet again instead of a sandbox, and the whole car smelled clean rather than like whatever had been riding around in the back since spring. That is the difference between a car that looks cleaned and a car that is actually clean.
